Immunohistochemistry Breast Markers Audit

Quality assurance activity for laboratories reporting immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in-situ hybridisation (ISH) breast markers through an audit of clinical results. There is no technical component to this survey but it comprises online submission of the hormone receptor and HER2 status for each case of early invasive primary (not stage 4 disease) breast carcinoma. A maximum of 100 cases from the preceding year are submitted.

Frequency / Number of samples

1 survey / 100 cases submitted per survey

Tests

Breast marker audit of cases reported by participant.

Immunohistochemistry General Markers

Proficiency testing for laboratories processing immunohistochemistry. A variety of markers are assessed each year. Unstained formalin fixed paraffin sections comprising of composite tissue block to be stained for 3 general markers.

Frequency / Number of samples

1 survey per year / 3 exercises per survey

Tests

Routine Immunohistochemistry. 2019 tests include NKX3.1 (alternate PSA); P40 (alternate p63); PMS2; and the additional repeat test from 2018 D240 (alternate CK5/6).

Immunohistochemistry Lung Markers

Proficiency testing for laboratories processing ALK immunohistochemistry. In 2019, this module will also include an alternate marker TTF-1. ALK IHC testing (alternate TTF-1). Unstained formalin fixed paraffin sections comprising of composite tissue block to be stained for ALK or TTF-1.

Immunohistochemistry PD-L1

Immunohistochemistry PD-L1 for non-small cell lung carcinoma. In collaboration with UK NEQAS. Proficiency testing for laboratories processing PD-L1 immunohistochemistry for non-small cell lung carcinoma. Unstained formalin fixed paraffin sections comprising of composite tissue and cell lines block to be stained for PD-L1. This is a technical proficiency testing module only. PD-L1 interpretation proficiency testing will be offered in collaboration with IQNPath when available. This is still in Pilot phase.

Liver and Pancreaticobiliary Diagnostic

Two subspecialties are showcased each year over a 3-4 year period and will be convened by a guest pathologist. In 2019, these subspecialties will be Liver & Pancreaticobiliary and Medical Renal. Modules suggested for future years include Bone/Soft tissue, Endocrine and Head & Neck. Proficiency testing for laboratories and pathologists reporting liver and pancreaticobiliary pathology. Educational resource for other laboratories and trainees. Stained sections are provided as virtual microscope slide images in the myQAP portal. USBs can be purchased separately.
